I have one house in Southern California, bought, and paid for but at 8.75% State Tax, the congestion, the people, and the bleak brown landscape I don't really care to live here any longer. In roughly the next few months I'll be tipping to the point where I can move where I want. So where do I want to live?
Low to No State Taxes - It's out of hand in California. I don't want to go through that again. I don't mind paying a bit but anything over 4% on what you buy is just to much.
Open Environment to Small Town - I want a nice neighborly environment. No frantic pace, no congestion, none of that crud. I'm more than willing to live where my nearest neighbor is 30 miles away. The biggest thing though is when I go to town everybody knows everybody. This is a place I'll be spending the rest of my life in and I really want to get to know everybody.
Green - I want it Green. Green tree's, green grass, etc. I'm not talking about somebody going out and spraying their brown grass green either.
Change in Seasons - I would like snow in the Winter, pretty flowers in the spring, lazy summer days, and autumn leaves that turn colors. Not the same thing each and every day.
Creeks, Lakes, and Rivers - At least within a 10 minute reach.
Reasonable cost of living - Once I move I'll have about 5k a month to live on for the first year.
How much do I have to spend? I have about 500k I could spend. I don't want to go over that amount. If I do I have to get a mortgage and to be honest I like living without debt.
So sell me on the best areas I should look. In a few months I'll head around the US and chronicle the different areas.
